Avoid Holiday Shopping Scams

Holiday Shopping is a great time to find deals and, unfortunately, it is also when scammers are in full force.  Online criminals will utilize this busy time to prey even more on consumers and businesses who are unsuspecting.

Be cautious when online shopping! Carefully examine sites and look for fake websites posing as official websites. Using a credit card can provide better fraud protection than a debit card, and using a third-party payment option, like PayPal or Venmo, can add a layer of protection since you are not entering your information directly.

Shopping local is a good way of avoiding online scams!

The Green River Police Department provides free RFID envelopes to protect your debit/credit cards from electronic pickpocketing. Stop by and pick one up available in the Police Department lobby.

This document from the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Secret Service has tips and best practices for both consumers and merchants.

We wish you a wonderful, scam-free, holiday season!
