Officers received two reports of attempted fraud. These reports stemmed from citizens advertising items for sale on KSL.com and receiving bogus checks for amounts far exceeding the advertised price of the item. The supposed buyer then wanted the sellers here in Green River to cash the checks and send the excess money and item to them out of state. The scam consists of sending checks which are counterfeit made out to the seller for amounst exceeding the price of the item for sale. The seller then cashes the check and sends the excess monies and item to the supposed buyer out of state. The seller days later is contacted by his bank and informed the check is no good, leaving the seller being responsible for the amount of the counterfeit check and losing the item that was for sale. The Green River Police Department wants citizens to be aware of these types of scams and contact the police department if they have questions.
